Denim Skirt Sewing Project

 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.

Deuteronomy 22:5

 

 I wear skirts/dresses all the time, but I am kind of picky about the ones I wear. I like the durability and versatility that denim skirts offer. 
A good denim skirt should be:
Long,
Quite Full,
and have
Deep Pockets.
  
I rarely find all of these qualities in a skirt. That is why I end up making my own a lot of the time.
I recently finished a denim skirt that I sewed for myself. Here are some pictures I took along the way.   

This is the wrong side of the fabric before I sewed the final seam.


This is the right side of the fabric.


I made pockets and belt loops.



I put a zipper closer in the back.


This button is just one that I used because I already had it. I may replace it when I have the chance. I almost always wear my shirts un-tucked, so, in any case the button won't be seen.



I top stitched all of the seems. 





This is the finished product! I am pleased with the results and will, hopefully, get plenty of use out of this skirt!

      Thank you for the compliment! :)
      I did not use a pattern for this skirt. I would love to tell you how I made this skirt, but I made so many changes along the way that it would be to confusing to figure out.
      It sees like every time a sew a skirt without a pattern I learn something new.
      I hope to work the glitches out and be able to explain the process soon! :)

  2. I love this skirt! I, too, wear denim most the time and I also choose the long, full skirts. The slimmer-cut ones don't work for me! I keep my eyes peeled for ones like this at thrift stores, if I can get them for a couple of dollars. Otherwise I sew my own. :) Thanks for sharing!

      Finding a skirt I really like at a thrift store is a great treat!
      I have to have lots of leg room. I want to be able to run should I so desire. :)

  3. Oh, you did a beautiful job on your skirt! I love how it hangs too. My mother used to make all of my clothes when I was growing up and she would have called your skirt a 'gored' skirt! :) I love to sew but haven't sewn for myself in a long time. I'm making dolls clothes and beginning to sew for my little granddaughter.

    1. Hi again! I know of the lovely Sarah at Lilacs and Springtime, and since she and I often comment on the same blogs I usually type my name as "Sarah A.". Of course, this time around I forgot and it was a good reminder to me to be consistent with that, even when I read and comment on things far too late at night. ;) I hope that the intended Sarah finds your lovely compliment, or perhaps you can post it on her site for her to be encouraged by!   6. This is a project that I've been wanting to do for a long time! It is getting harder and harder to find nice, modest skirts even at thrift shops anymore.
    Our internet here is so slow that I could only get one of the pictures in your post to load, so I don't really have a good idea of what your skirt looks like. It sounds nice, though! :)

  7. Great job! I love skirts like this too. Good for riding in. I cut them a bit slimmer for wearing when it is windy though :).
