Doll Dresses

I thought I'd take a few minutes to show you what sewing project I worked on last week (and into this week, too).

I made theses doll dresses out of some type of taffeta that I had laying around. I don't have any dolls so I was guessing about the dimensions.

I did use a real baby's dress to help guide me. :)
The little girl that I am going to give these dresses to spends a lot of time playing with her dolls and I am hopeful that she has a doll that will fit into these dresses.

This is the first time I have made doll dresses and they took me a lot longer to finish than I expected. I intended on them being a birthday gift, now they are going to be a belated birthday gift. :)

Experimenting In The Kitchen With Food Coloring!

I recently wanted to dye some frosting and decided to do a little experimenting!
I used ground tumeric to tint my frosting yellow.  I sprinkled about a quarter of a teaspoon of tumeric over 8oz. cream cheese and 4oz. butter and beat until smooth and light. I waited about 30 minutes for the color to absorb and then I mixed in enough powdered sugar to make a nice frosting, about 1 lb.
I put the frosting into a container and refrigerated it overnight. The yellow color became brighter and deeper the longer it sat. I could taste the tumeric a little bit, but I was still very happy with how well the frosting turned out.

The next color I decided to try was red.
I drained all of the liquid out of a jar of beets.

I boiled the liquid in a sauce pan on the stove until in reduced to a thick syrup. Then I cooled the syrup by putting the sauce pan into a sink of cold water.

When the beet syrup was cooled I added  it to a small amount of frosting. It did not dye the frosting red, but it did make a pleasant Rose color.

Here is a cake I decorated with the colored frosting.

The yellow is little brighter than what is showing up in the picture.
I just used melted baker's chocolate for the eyes and outlines.

Recent Sewing Projects

I have been doing a lot of sewing lately!
One of the projects a have been working on is this pillow. It is a wedding gift for a family member and I am planning to embroider their names and anniversary date on the white stripe.

There was just enough scraps leftover to make this wall hanging sized quilt top.

It had been awhile since the last time I worked on a quilt top. These two pieces have been fun little projects!  :)

Lovely Irises!

Another treat that comes with Springtime are beautiful flowers. :)
These old-fashioned Bearded German Irises are some of my favorites. Their fragrance is so delightful!

I cut them yesterday evening before any of the blossoms had unfurled and this morning I woke up to several lovely blooms.
These cuttings should brighten my kitchen for sometime seeing as they have many buds to come open yet. :)

And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  - Matthew 6:29

I was just out for a walk this morning and snapped these pictures of my bleeding hearts. It is such a nice morning, looks as though we're going to have a beautiful day!

Spring Treat

I picked some lettuce today! It is washed and ready for supper. Fresh lettuce is one of the many treats that spring brings. :)
