He Walked In The Cool Of The Evening by Henry Beer (Poem)

He Walked In The Cool Of The Evening
Genesis 3:8

It was in the cool of the evening,
In a garden most wondrously fair,
Where the Father had placed the first mortals,
And He walked and He talked with them there.

As the skies are the fairest at sunset,
With purple and gold and gray,
So the fields and the gardens and flowers
Are brightest at close of the day.

What bliss for the morals in Eden
As through the fair garden they trod,
They saw the great wonders of nature
And shared in the glory of God.

Then alas! In disguise came the temper.
Then the sin - and the fall, and disgrace.
Their rapture was turned into sorrow,
And Eden a dark, dismal place.

Again as they walked in the garden
With a sorrow their hearts had ne'er known,
Unclothed and condemned and rejected,
They walked in the garden alone.

My friend, as you hear the Lord's calling,
Hide not from His presence away.
Will you say, "Here am I," to the master,
As you walk in the cool of the day?

Sewing Projects In June

12 years ago I made dresses for myself and 4 of my sister's. You can see the colors below. The materials that I used all had the matching shades of purple.
I made two dresses with the floral print, two with the plaid, and my dress was made with the reddish/purple.

Some of the dresses have been given back to me. Mostly because they needed repairs, but also, because the girls out grew them.
I pulled one of them out of the storage box this month and fixed it up for my daughter to wear.
It brought back sweet memories of being a big sister. Now my own daughter can wear the dress that I made for her aunt.

We went to my brother's wedding at the beginning of the month and my daughter got to wear the red dress that I had finished in time. She was not a flower girl, but I wanted her to feel special. I know how much little girls like weddings, especially my daughter. She is such a girly girl!
My handy work project this month has been sewing on these baby whales. These have been in a tub of unfinished projects for going on 2 years. I did a lot of work on these whales when I was pregnant with my last baby. I have 18 of them waiting to be finished.
This month I have been going to the playground with the children a lot. These baby whales make a nice hand sewing project to bring along.
You can see by the stains on my fingers that we found a mulberry tree on the way to the playground. :-)

That is the update for June. I'll see you again at the end of July with another progress report. I hope all of your projects are going well!

Consecrated Hands By Henry Beer (Poem)

Consecrated Hands

By Henry Beer

Consecrated hands
Waiting God's commands
Service to perform.
Blessings follow still
All who do His will
Alike in sun and storm.

Humble though the task,
More He does not ask
That we do our best!
If in grace we live,
Service that we give
Truly will be blest.

Market, office, home,
Or in labor lone,
Prove the workman's brand.
Servants, nurses, too,
May their work review
Blest by higher hand.

Christian's work you see,
Not alone for fee,
Not for mere reward;
But with single eye
Talents they apply
As into the Lord.

Consecrated toil,
In workship, home or soil,
Finds it's due reward.
All success we share,
Sanctified by prayer,
Owe we to the Lord.

Cinnamon Roll Recipe!

Dough:
1 cup Milk, warm
1/2 cup Water, warm
1 TBS. Yeast
1/4 cup Butter, soft
1/3 cup Sugar
1/2 TBS. Salt
2 Eggs
4 1/2 - 5 cups Flour

Combine the milk, water, yeast, butter, sugar and salt.
Add 2 cups of flour.
Beat in eggs.
Stir in enough flour to form a soft dough.
Knead well.
Cover and let rise until doubled. (About an hour.)

On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a 30"×10" rectangle.
Smear the surface of the dough with 1/2 cup soft butter.
Blend together 1 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of cinnamon (add a couple dashes of ground cloves if desired.)
Sprinkle cinnamon sugar evenly over the smeared butter.
Starting at one of the long edges: roll the dough up into a log.
Using a sharp serrated knife, cut the log into cinnamon rolls about an inch to an inch and a quarter thick.

Prepare the pan(s) by coating with a generous layer of melted butter. Sprinkle sugar evenly over the butter.

Place the cinnamon rolls into the prepared pan(s). Leave space between the rolls to allow for rising.
Cover and let rise for about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the warmth of your kitchen.
Bake cinnamon rolls in a preheated 375° oven for 20-25 minutes.

In the meantime make the frosting:
Maple Flavored Cream Cheese Frosting
1/2 cup Butter, soft
8  oz. Cream Cheese, soft
1 tsp. Vanilla Flavor
1 tsp. Maple Flavor
3- 3 1/2 cups Powdered Sugar

Cream together the butter, cream cheese, and flavorings until light and airy.
Mix in the powdered sugar.

Frost the cinnamon rolls while they are still warm.
Enjoy!

The Rainbow By Henry Beer (Poem)

The Rainbow
By Henry Beer

My lad exclaimed with wonder,
As storm clouds had passed by,
"O father, see the rainbow
Up yonder in the sky!"

The storm of summer evening
Had passed to eastern skies.
We saw the rainbow's beauty
Displayed before our eyes.

And thus I found occasion,
In reverent tones and low,
To tell my lad the story
Of that first wondrous bow.

I told him of the waters
Which covered sea and land;
How God preserved the righteous
With His almighty hand.

I spoke about the rainbow
Which God had placed on high,
With colors most majestic,
Alluring to the eye.

The bow has seven colors
Which we can well behold;
Of yellow, red, green, violet,
Blue, indigo, and gold.

The rainbow gives assurance
According to God's word,
That the world by mighty deluge
Ne'er again shall be destroyed.

As children see the beauty
In the color of the bow,
Should not we esteem His promise
As in faith we older grow?

For the rainbow is a symbol
Of the beauty there on high,
And a token of his promise
For a home beyond the sky.

Cheddar Biscuit Recipe

My daughter is my main helper today.

We are going to make Cheddar Garlic Biscuits together.

Step 1. is to shred the cheese. We want 4 cups of cheese loosely packed. We are making a double batch.

Next we stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

After the dry ingredients are blended, we shred the cold butter. We add the butter fragments and the shredded cheese to the dry ingredients.

We use our hands to toss the cheese and butter throughout the floury mixture.
We stir in 2 1/2 cups of milk for our large batch.
The dough is gooey. These are drop biscuits. No rolling pin required.
I like to shape the biscuits with a large ice cream scoop.

I brush garlic butter over the biscuits before they go into the oven and again when they come out of the oven.

Garlic Cheddar Biscuits

2c. Flour
1 TBS. Baking Powder
1 tsp. Salt
1/4 c. Butter, cold (1/2 stick)
2 cups loosely packed Cheddar Cheese
1 1/4 c. Milk
1/4c. Butter, melted
1/2 tsp. Garlic powder or freshly crushed garlic cloves (2-3)
1/2 tsp. Dried Parsley

Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Cut in the cold butter. You can use a pastry cutter or use this trick I learned from my sister. She uses a cheese grater to shred cold butter into her biscuits dough.

Stir in the cheese.

Add the milk and stir until evenly moist.
Drop by spoonful onto greased baking sheet.

Add garlic and parsley to the melted butter.

Brush the biscuits with garlic herb butter.
Bake 450°F. 15 minutes

Remove from oven and brush again with garlic butter.
Enjoy!

Free Water By Henry Beer (Poem)

Free Water
By Henry Beer

While working in my garden,
When plants are very dry,
I seek by man's contrivance
The moisture to supply.
Perchance by human efforts
Some water is supplied,
The space that man can water
Is neither large nor wide.

When we have cares engrossing
It takes much precious time
To use the hose in watering;
It throws us out of line.
The water from the hydrant
Joined to the main supply
We think about conserving
As days are hot and dry.

The water from the storage
Is not given to us free;
By the reading on the meter
We must pay the proper fee.
If He who governs nature
Does not charge for blessings sent,
Should we not at least be grateful,
Filled with love and kind intent?

Now have you ever pondered
How wonderful - the rain!
It falls to earth in volumes
And waters hill and plain.
The reservoirs of water
Held in clouds so high,
We mortals can not measure,
Not fathom the supply.

The Father's store is bounteous,
And He provides for all;
For man and beasts and flowers
He causes rain to fall.
Now man by human wisdom
Does wonders, we agree!
But God gives rain in volume,
And what's more, it's free!

Gardening 2023 The Beginning

This is sometimes called, "Winter Sowing." The ideal is to make miniature greenhouses out of milk jugs.
I used 1 gallon water bottles.

I cut the tops off of the water bottles, poked drainage holes in the bottom, and put 3 inches of steriled soil in the bottles. I then planted seeds and put the tops back onto the bottles.
I left the bottles outside. This was back on March 25th. It was still too cold to plant most seeds in the garden, but the water bottle greenhouses gave these seeds a headstart.

This method worked out very well for me this year. I was able to keep more seedlings alive and to the point of being transplanted than some years that I start seeds indoors. Having little ones inside that want to play in my potting soil makes it difficult to keep seedlings alive.

My tomatoes are doing very well now that they are transplanted into the garden. The tomato seeds are the ones that I saved from last year's tomato fruits.

How are your gardens growing? Have you heard of, "Winter Sowing," before. Have you tried, "Winter Sowing?" I look forward to reading about it in the comments section.

June By Henry Beer (Poem)

June

By Henry Beer

It is the pleasant month of June,
When roses in profusion bloom.
What precious memories come to mind:
To see the rosebush there entwined
Upon the garden gate, aglow,
Which mother planted years ago!
The mock orange, too, is a delight,
With fragrant blossoms, pure and white.
Who does not deem it a rich treat
The luscious strawberries to eat,
Which have emerged from winter's cold,
As the first-fruits of the year unfold?
'Tis in the pleasant month of June
When clover fields are sweet with boom;
The new-mown hay is mowed away -
Provision for the wintry day.
Refreshing showers, the sun's bright glow
Have caused the field of corn to grow.
The longest days of all the year
Within the month of June appear.
There's growing corn, and ripening wheat,
The new-mown hay with fragrance sweet,
The pleasant days and blooming flowers,
The morning dew and frequent showers -
Until there come more perfect days,
The month of June shall have our praise.
